Well, with Destiny ‘s first expansion, The Dark Below , the game was given its second Raid — a high-end, high-difficulty mission that could only be completed by the best of the best. As part of its series of pre-release reveals, Bungie finally showed off the Raid’s replacement, otherwise known as the Prison of Elders. Is this new, Horde Mode-style match a worth successor — or will fans be stuck with a half-baked co-op mode until the next true Raid is released? From what Bungie has shown, longtime Destiny players should be excited. At its core, the mode is a cooperative endurance test against wave after wave of the game’s toughest enemies. Bungie is however making sure that the mode won’t become a slog. There’s the core Arena that opens at level 28, and six other “Challenge” variations on top of that.
DESTINY: HO– USE OF WOLVES REVIEW
Editor’s Note: For detailed hands-on impressions on House of Wolves, check out our op-ed on why we love the new expansion. If you’ve put down your pulse rifle and decided to take a break from mowing down hordes of aliens in Destiny, now’s a pretty good time to come back. The game’s second expansion, House of Wolves, on May 19 will bring fresh game modes, new maps and, most importantly, sweet new gear to Bungie’s massively popular online shooter.
If you’re considering hopping back into orbit to help the Queen take down her Fallen foes, here’s everything you need to know about the expansion before it arrives on Xbox , Xbox One, PS3 and PS4. House of Wolves’ new story missions center around the Queen of the Awoken, whom you’ll aid in her fight against the humanoid Fallen race that betrayed her.
But it was never really clear what the heck was going on beyond those airy concepts. How are the Guardians revived and who are they? What the heck is the deal with that royal family living in the space junkyard? And why do the Ghosts sound like Peter Dinklage waking up from a really long sleep? Also, what the hell are the Ghosts? So many mysteries. There are, of course, rumours that the Destiny story mode was originally much more dense, but that Bungie was forced to jettison great chunks of content as the planned release deadline loomed hence the relegation of lots of narrative detail to the Grimoire cards, which you have to go online and READ.
But with House of Wolves , which is set to add five new story missions to the game, Bungie says it is determined to set things straight. It is one that we can pay off via what the player is doing in the missions. Barrett conceded that Bungie will still be adding Grimoire cards to provide deeper lore for those who want it, but the main thrust of the story is all there.

Bungie details the Prison of Elders from Destiny expansion House of Wolves
House of Wolves introduces a new social space set in The Reef, a dilapidated base run by the Queen of the Awoken packed with new missions and new activities. In addition to five new story missions set all over the solar system, and a new Strike called The Shadow Thief, House of Wolves brings a muscular new PvE mode that aims to keep high-level co-op players fighting and looting. Devoted Prison of Elders fans can also unlock special challenges at levels 32, 34, and
There’s a moment in one of House of Wolves’ campaign missions that get access to Destiny’s two-part new endgame: the Prison of Elders and You need to arrange your own team, for one thing – matchmaking is disabled.
Everything about expansion two for Bungie’s “shared world shooter” Destiny makes sense to me. The changes to the competitive multiplayer portion of the game we reported on last week give PvP, for the first time, a proper endgame. The new upgrade system means any Legendary or Exotic weapon and armour piece can be made level 34 – without it losing progression. And the new Prison of Elders arena mode, revealed by Bungie today, is a cool twist on wave-based fighting and a lot of fun for three-player Fireteams.
But, having played Prison of Elders, I just can’t shake the sense of disappointment about House of Wolves not adding a new Raid. Bungie has its reasons and I get them. I imagine Destiny’s Raids, which are designed for six players and require a level of communication and strategy beyond the rest of the game, are impenetrable to many.
Without matchmaking, Raids require groups of players to manually form Fireteams. This just isn’t feasible for a lot of people. The Prison of Elders is for Fireteams of three players, and there is a relatively easy version that supports matchmaking. Almost all Destiny players should be able to play this mode and have fun doing it. And while you have to play the harder Challenge versions of Prison of Elders to get the best loot the level 35 version drops the new damage type primary weapons, for example , Prison of Elders – unlike the Raids Vault of Glass and Crota’s End – offers something for everyone.
Senior designer Matt Sammons describes Prison of Elders as a bridge between Strike level difficulty and Raid level difficulty, and its inclusion certainly fills a gap.

Looking out from the new Vestian Outpost in the Reef.
Destiny: House of Wolves’ Prison of Elders is more than just a Horde hooking up with two other players via Matchmaking, or you can take.
It is based on the House of Judgment ‘s traditions for settling disputes between Fallen through trial by combat. The Archon Priest Aksor was previously a prisoner before later being retrieved by Taniks and having his soul restored by the House of Winter on Venus. The Prison of Elders is also known to contain members of the House of Wolves that were captured during the Reef Wars , though it also contains Hive , Vex and Cabal inmates who have attacked the Reef.
These prisoners are considered “trophies” by the Reef, kept cryogenically frozen for the Queen’s benefit. Though since Skolas ‘ rebellion, the Queen now wants the prison cleared out, and has recruited the Guardians to do it. A year after the Red War , the undead Fallen horde known as the Scorn orchestrated an incredibly massive breakout from the prison, following a lack of order after Mara Sov ‘s and Variks ‘ disappearances.
Uldren Sov was behind the escape, and executed Cayde-6 with his own weapon after he attempted to stop the breakout alongside the Guardian. Numerous prisoners not strictly affiliated with the Scorn, collectively referred to as the Wanted , also escaped the prison, going on to roam Patrol zones and roost in Lost Sectors. The Prison is featured in the House of Wolves as part of the new Arena game mode.
It is limited to 3 players. The Level 28 mission includes matchmaking and is always random. The other three “challenge” missions are at Levels 32, 34, and 35, and require pre-made fireteams.

House of Wolves represents all the strides Bungie has made thus far in mode is that the level 28 Prison of Elders matchmaking is removed.
As with past reveals, including the Reef social space tour and the Trials of Osiris preview, this was a live demo, so much of what Bungie revealed was scattered across an ultimately ill-fated playthrough. This is arguably one of the more exciting endgame activities included in House of Wolves, and so players were appropriately eager to find out more. These maps will also come in four different difficulties — level 28, level 32, level 34, and level They will each carry their own enemy types, objectives, and modifiers more on that in a bit , but can only be completed once for full rewards.
The other three options require pre-made teams. Players spawn into an airlock surrounded by four doors.
